You often hear about "the hidden market" in a job search: jobs that aren't posted on job boards, etc., so they're hard to find, and not everybody knows about them.
Well, music has its own "hidden markets" too - places to sell your music that don't seem obvious because they're not in the spotlight.
People associate music with "being in the spotlight," and being famous. Well, here's a little secret: not every musician wants to be famous.
I shock people when I tell them I don't want to be "famous," or perform. I love Brandi Carlisle like I love air, and part of it is, damn, that girl can perform. She makes it look like so much freakin' fun.
But not for me. That would be hell on earth for me.
So what's a "wallflower" like me supposed to do?
Go find the hidden market for music: ways of using music where you can kill two birds with one shot - make money, and stay out of the spotlight.
This takes a little imagination, and some info. I'm planning now to sell my music to businesses, and focus less on selling it to the public. That music underneath the talking in a radio commercial? Well, somebody made it...and somebody else paid for it. I know about that. I used music "beds" when I made commercials when I was in radio.
Imagine watching a commercial and hearing your song in it. And the next thing you hear is ka-chinggggggg!!! I would not mind if my music wound up in a feminine hygiene product commercial. I think it would be hilarious, actually! And I'd laugh my ass off all the way to the bank.
So next time you're wondering how to get your next gig, or how to get Some Famous Musician to record your song...think about how it would feel to stand in line at the grocery store, and hear something reaaaaaalllllly familiar come on the in-store network. And even better, remembering that song helped you pay for your groceries.
This Fortune doesn't want fame. Ironic, isn't it??😂
Wallflowers make the world a better place... and you do too Fortune!
