Help Wanted

I believe a song comes to you "already formed." It's in the shape it wants to be in, and your job is to help it come to life - and it chose you for that. It "hired you," in a sense.

But unlike an actual employer today, it won't require a bachelor's degree or sixty-two years of experience, put you through an online application, an applicant tracking system, fourteen skills assessments, nine personality tests, eighteen interviews, ask you questions like "If you were a color, what color would you be?" - which an interviewer did ask me once - or "Where do you see yourself in five years?", make you wait four months, and then ghost you, or say "We have decided to go in another direction."

Songs "decide to go in another direction" all the time. But a song will stick with you for the long haul - and it won't make you jump through one hoop after another. It'll say, essentially, "I trust you. You got this!"

It'll also be realistic and say "Look, we've got work to do. And I'm not the easiest boss. I'll make you work hard, and I won't always be satisfied with what you come up with. I'll ride your ass until you do better. But that's because I know you can. That's why I hired you to write me."

So I'm figuring out that if a song "hires me" to write it...well, it must think I'm up to the job.

And I don't even need to apply for it!
