"What You Won't Do For Love"

I think you know what this is about.

Bobby Caldwell wrote one of the most unique, most covered, and most sampled songs in American musical history. It's romantic, sexy, and classy all at once. I often wonder how many weddings it's been played at.

I heard once that he wrote it because he was dating a girl he had to drive three hours each way to see, and he thought "What you won't do for love." Can't vouch for the truthfulness of the story, but it's fun to think about!

I've seen a lot of these "hearing for the first time" videos, and yes, many people have been shocked to discover that he was white, not black, as many assumed because of his ultra soulful sound. The man could sing like no one else.

But many people in these videos have also noticed things like the lonnggggg outtro, and the multi-instrumentation. They say things like "Songs today just don't have that. But I liiike it!"

Maybe this song could spark a return to the kind of song Bobby basically "trademarked." Wouldn't that be something?

And now for your listening pleasure...

  1. Such a good song. It's funny how many people are surprised when they see who sings this! I've always been a fan of "more than meets the eye." Thanks for the song link :).

    1. I've been watching these "first time hearing something" songs and it's hilarious watching people discover Bobby Caldwell was white. But part of me thinks "You could've Googled this a long time ago. It's not that hard." But instead, people chose to assume something: "I just assumed he was black!" Folks....Google is there to help you find out things. Use it.
