I find that a lot of my songwriting influences come from the 70s. That's not really a coincidence, because I grew up in the 70s, and because my music has a very strong acoustic style.
I loved James Taylor, Carole King, America, and Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young then. Still do. (I liked Joni Mitchell somewhat then, but her influence didn't really kick in until I became a songwriter.) But there are countless other musicians I heard then too who still roam around my songwriting subconscious brain, including James Taylor's ex-wife Carly Simon. I'll probably think of thirty-eight more musicians after I publish this!
Do you think your music reflects a certain era more strongly than others? If so, why do you think that is? What do you think that says about you as a songwriter, and as a person too?
Leave your comments on this. I'd love to hear them!
