Hi, I'm Fortune McLemore (she/her/hers), and I'm in Silver Spring, MD, in the DC burbs. I've been writing songs for about five years now, and one thing I've found: it ain't for sissies.
I started my journey in songwriting knowing absolutely nothing about it. And I mean nothing. At all. But I used to be a professional photographer, and I knew nothing about that when I started. So I worked really hard, and got good at it. I've taken the same approach with songwriting.
It's been hard to think of myself as a songwriter, since I took it up so late in life. But it's my favorite thing to do now. I won't say I'm great at it, but I don't totally suck, either. I just know I have a lot of work to do on it.
Songwriting is what I'm most comfortable doing in music. It makes me feel like I have a "home" in music, and like I have "a place at the table." I'm sort of "the runt of the litter" in music, but I write because I have things to say.
I play guitar passably well, and I'm a decent enough singer. I play and sing both for my songwriting, though. I don't do them to perform. I'm simply not a performer. I don't have that "performing gene."
I don't want this blog to be "all about ME." I want to pass along info about songwriting, like business, financial, and legal info, plus tips and guides for songwriting. I also want to talk with songwriters I know, and introduce them to you.
So...grab your guitars, your keyboards, your...whatever you want...and let's have a good time!
